Josie, our Young, No.1 Carer of the Month, would like to share her story with us
My name is Josie, and I would like to share my Carer story with you.
I am only sixteen, and I look after my elderly grandma after school.
I do her shopping for her, help with her housework, and cook her light meals.
She gets quite lonely and it brightens her day and makes her smile to have some company.
I like helping my grandma and it is so hard for her to do things for herself. She uses a Zimmer frame to shuffle about, but finds it hard to cope alone.
It is hard caring for my grandma on top of my school work, and it means I don’t see my friends a great deal, but I wouldn’t change a thing.
Mum says she is so proud of me and nicknames me her “little Star”.
I have recently joined an after school club for young carers and I go once a week. It is nice to meet other people like me who look after their relatives. Sometimes it can make you feel different and alone.
I hope my story helps other young carers like me to see they are not on their own.
Love Josie X
Tip for the month: check out your local cinema for discounts (carers can often receive a reduction in cinema tickets for both themselves and the loved one they care for)
